October 10, 2007/Iowa City, IA: Catherine H. Abrams, Vice President of Nursing at Mercy Iowa City, has been named the 2007 IONL Outstanding Nurse Executive by the Iowa Organization of Nurse Leaders.
“I am extremely honored to have been nominated by my colleagues at Mercy and to be selected by my peers for this award,” said Abrams.
Abrams received the prestigious award on October 3 in Des Moines at the 78th annual meeting of the Iowa Hospital Association.
Abrams joined Mercy Iowa City in August 2002 as Vice President of Professional Services and became Vice President of Nursing in 2002.
“Cathy has been instrumental in making Mercy one of the top hospitals in Iowa for patient care. She is responsible for leading Mercy's quality and patient safety initiatives,” said Ronald R. Reed, Mercy President and CEO.
A native of Albert City, Iowa, Abrams received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1970 and spent seven years on active duty in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She holds a master’s degree in adult and occupational education from Kansas State University and a master’s of science degree in management from Southern Nazarene University. Abrams’ career has included hospital and nursing administration roles in Kansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma.
“The entire nursing staff at Mercy is very pleased that Cathy has received this statewide honor,” said Jeanne Hein, Director of Nursing Operations. “Cathy is a great asset and helps all of us keep patient care at the forefront of our work.”
In her tenure at Mercy, Abrams has been especially involved with quality and patient safety initiatives. She has also been active in IONL and is the organization’s current President Elect.
