staff recognized at awards program

(May 10, 2010) ––The tenth recipient of the Ruth Becker
Award for Outstanding Nursing Care was announced on May 6, at a
special ceremony at Mercy Iowa City. Long-time pediatrics nurse,
Pat Yauk, RN, was selected from four nominees for the award.
Sam and Ruth
Becker initiated the award in 2001 with a gift to the Mercy Hospital
Foundation. The award, which includes a $500 gift for the recipient,
is announced during National Nurses Week each spring. Ruth, a retired
nurse, wished to recognize exceptional Mercy nurses providing direct
patient care.
The Dr. T.T.
Bozek Friend of Nursing Award was awarded for the first time to
Laura Ruplinger, who works in the payroll department. Laura also
received a $500 gift. The award was created in memory of Dr. T.T.
Bozek, a member of the Mercy medical staff for over 50 years and
Johnson County coroner for 33 years.
At the ceremony,
Katie Kleinmeyer was recognized for being awarded the $600 Margaret
G. Fox Ph.D. Educational Scholarship and Heidi Klein was also recognized
for being the recipient of the Sister Mary Josephus $600 Nursing
Scholarship. The first Rose Margaret Reed Nursing Scholarship was
awarded to Stephanie Sparks. The scholarships have been created
through Mercy Foundation to assist Mercy employees wishing to enhance
their nursing skills.
