Mercy Wound Center

The Mercy Wound Center, opened in September 2011, provides advanced outpatient treatment for chronic and non-healing wounds and is the first facility of its kind in Johnson County. An experienced team, cutting-edge treatments, and evidence-based clinical protocols provide superior healing outcomes for difficult to heal wounds.

Mercy general surgeon Darwin D. Peterson, DO, FACS, is Medical Director of the Mercy Wound Center and Judy Bennett, BS, CHT, is Program Director.

Indications for wound care
  • Diabetic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Venous stasis ulcers
  • Arterial ulcers
  • Vasculitic ulcers
  • Non-healing surgical wounds
  • Complex soft tissue wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Infected wounds

Mercy's approach includes access to specialists in plastic and reconstructive surgery, infectious diseases, podiatry, and nutrition. Treatment plans will be highly individualized. Treatment methods will include skin grafting and skin substitute grafting, antibiotics, aggressive debridement of wounds, the use of substrates such as Promogran, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

During HBOT the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen under pressure, causing the oxygen to diffuse into the blood plasma. The pressurized environment helps to reduce swelling and discomfort, while providing the body with at least 10 times its normal supply of oxygen to help repair damaged tissues.

The Mercy Wound Center is located on the main floor of the hospital, east of the skywalk entrance, facing Market Street. Phone is 319-339-3967.
