Mercy offers
an Outpatient Diabetes Education Program and Outpatient Pregnancy
Diabetes Education Program. Both programs are recognized by the
American Diabetes Association, and certified by the State of Iowa.
The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program includes:
- Initial
assessment of the person's educational needs
- Education
specific to the needs of the individual, and ordered by the physician
- Instruction
in a group or individual setting

- Diet management
- Medication
- Insulin

- Chronic

Instruction
for diabetes during pregnancy is scheduled for two hours, with follow-up
appointments. Topics covered are:
- What is
diabetes and how does it affect the mother and the baby
- Self blood
glucose monitoring
- Diet
- Safe exercise
Insurance may
cover the cost of Diabetes Education. Pre-diabetes class is self
pay. Mercy also provides a monthly support
group for people with type 2 diabetes.The group meets in the
first floor conference room on the first Thursday of each month,
with times alternating between day and evening. At the noon meetings,
participants are invited to bring their lunch; beverages provided.
