Nutrition and Wellness Center

Mercy has a Nutrition & Wellness Center which includes Diabetes Education, wellness assessments, nutrition appointments with a registered dietitian, weight loss programs and a Heart Healthy Yoga program. Nutrition and Wellness Coaching
An individual nutrition assessment completed by a Registered Dietitian for general nutrition education not related to a medical diagnosis.  No physician referral is required and topics may include but are not limited to: healthy eating for you and your family, weight loss, mindful eating, increasing fiber in your diet,  heart healthy diet and many more topics.  Fee is $45 for 30 minutes and $60 for an hour.

A Nutrition & Wellness Quick Clinic will be offered on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 11 a.m. to noon. This is an opportunity for patients and employees to stop by for assistance with testing/glucose meters, brief questions, other support, and information about education opportunities.

Weight Warriors – A twelve-week weight loss program that includes weekly classes taught by a Registered Dietitian, lipid and glucose blood tests and a physical therapy assessment. The program will help you set weight loss and health goals and be accountable with weekly weigh-ins. The focus of classes are healthy eating, portion control and the importance of physical activity.

Heart Healthy Yoga Classes – Ongoing yoga classes taught by a skilled Heart Healthy Yoga Instructor.

DROP IN sessions are offered every Tuesday from 10 a.m. -11 a.m.; every Wednesday from 2:30 pm -3:30 pm  and 3:45 pm - 4:45 pm. Cost is $6.00 per class and is payable in check or cash at each session. The first class attended is offered at no charge. Registration is required for the first class only.

Classes are held in McAuley I or II depending on the day.

Heart Healthy Yoga is for everyone. This class is intended not only for people who have had a medical or surgical cardiac problem, but also for those who want to try a gentle form of yoga for any reason. The focus of the class is on modified yoga positions, breathing, and relaxation. Individuals who have had a cardiac procedure or surgery such as heart surgery or pacemaker insertion need to wait 6 weeks after the event prior to starting class.

Participants should wear comfortable clothing. Sessions are done in a chair or with the assistance of a chair.

Pre-diabetes class that aims to prevent complications. The class is intended for people who do not have diabetes, but have higher than normal glucose. The goal is to make changes in behavior to prevent a diagnosis of  diabetes. Instruction includes how to begin an exercise program, use a glucose meter and maintain a healthy diet. All classes are taught by a registered dietitian.  register here

Outpatient Diabetes Education Program and Outpatient Pregnancy Diabetes Education Program. Both programs are recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and certified by the State of Iowa. The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program includes:

  • Initial assessment of the person's educational needs
  • Education specific to the needs of the individual, and ordered by the physician
  • Instruction in a group or individual setting

Information covered includes:

  • Definition of diabetes
  • Self blood glucose monitoring
  • Exercise
  • Diet management
  • Medication
  • Insulin administration
  • Acute complications
  • Chronic complications
  • Coping with diabetes
  • Achievement of goals
  • Insulin pump therapy

Instruction for diabetes during pregnancy is scheduled for two hours, with follow-up appointments. Topics include:

  • What is diabetes and how does it affect the mother and the baby
  • Self blood glucose monitoring
  • Diet
  • Safe exercise

Insurance may cover the cost of Diabetes Education. Pre-diabetes class is self pay. 

Monthly support group for people with type 2 diabetes and cardiac conditions. The group meets in the lower level of Mercy Medical Plaza on the third Wednesday of each month, at 11:30 a.m. Please call to register to attend: 319-339-3538.
