Nutrition and Wellness Center

Mercy has an outpatient Nutrition and Wellness Center which includes Diabetes Education and nutrition education/counseling appointments with a registered dietitian. The Nutrition and Wellness Center is located on the first level of the hospital, near the Cafeteria.

Nutrition and Wellness Visit
  • One-on-one nutrition assessment completed by a Registered Dietitian for general nutrition education not related to a medical diagnosis. 
  • Topics may include, but are not limited to: healthy eating for you and your family, weight management, mindful eating and increasing fiber in your diet. 
  • Available in-person or virtually.
  • Fee is $45 for 30 minutes; $90 for an hour. No physician referral required. Please call 319-339-3538 to schedule your appointment.
Nutrition and Wellness Package
  • One-on-one nutrition counseling sessions with a Registered Dietitian for general nutrition counseling and is not related to a medical diagnosis. 
  • Includes a 60 minute initial nutrition assessment followed by five 30 minute monthly nutrition counseling sessions (6 visits total within 6 months).
  • Available in-person or virtually.
  • Fee is $270. No physician referral required. Please call 319-339-3538 to schedule your appointment.
Medical Nutrition Therapy
  • Physician referral is required.
  • One-on-one nutrition education related to a medical diagnosis completed by a Registered Dietitian.
  • Medical diagnosis may include, but are not limited to: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, fructose intolerance, cancer, etc.
  • We encourage you to check your insurance coverage prior to scheduling an appointment. 
Virtual Pre-diabetes Class

  • Education includes understanding pre-diabetes and diabetes, healthy eating and the importance of physical activity. 
  • Intended for people who do not have diabetes, but would like to learn more about preventing or delaying the diagnosis of diabetes. 
  • Class is taught by a Registered Dietitian.

Outpatient Diabetes Education Program and Outpatient Pregnancy Diabetes Education Program

  • Physician referral is required.

Both programs are recognized by the American Diabetes Association and certified by the State of Iowa. The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program includes:

  • Individualized Diabetes Education
  • Group Diabetes Classes
  • Annual Follow-Up
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring Instruction

Instruction for diabetes during pregnancy with follow-up appointments. Topics include:

  • Physical Activity/Being Active
  • Delaying/Preventing Type 2 Diabetes in the Future
  • Insulin administration
Medicare covers up to 10 hours of Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) as a once-in-a-lifetime benefit that must be used within 12 consecutive months once started. Each subsequent calendar year, Medicare covers up to 2 hours of DSMT with a new referral. Most commercial insurers follow Medicare, but its best to check with your insurer to verify coverage.
