Support Groups

Parking Info 

Wheelchair information: If you need a wheelchair, please go to the Information Desk and call Patient Escort Services at extension 2200. Due to the high demand for wheelchairs, Patient Escort Services will be happy to assist anyone needing transportation to a meeting room.  

Breastfeeding and More
Weekly group for breastfeeding families. Expecting parents are also welcome. No fee. Group meets Thursdays, noon to 2 p.m., McAuley room, Mercy Medical Plaza. Call Mercy On Call for a listing of specific dates.

Breath of Fresh Air
This support group is for people living with chronic lung disease. It meets on the first Monday of each month, except during January, February, and September.

Monday, May 5, 7 to 8 p.m., Fanning room, Mercy Medical Plaza. Connie Knepp, respiratory therapist, will discuss "Respiratory Medications - New and Old."
Monday, June 2, 7 to 8 p.m. McAuley room, Mercy Medical Plaza. Dr. Marta Little will present the program "Current Asthma Management."

Cardiac Support Group
This group provides monthly education and support meetings; a heart-healthy luncheon is also available for $5 (payable at door). All meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 11:30 in the McAuley room, Mercy Medical Plaza. A presentation follows at 12 noon. Reservations are requested no later than the Friday prior to each meeting. Call Mercy On Call, 358-2767 or 1-800-358-2767.

Monday, April 21, Linda Funk, Executive Director of the Soy Foods Council, will present "Soy - Part of  Heart Healthy Diet."
Monday, May 19, Bruce Anderson, ARNP, Mercy Hospital and Mercy Home Health, will present a program on "Patient Navigator for Special Patient Populations." 

Continuing After Breast Cancer Support Group
This group welcomes women who are living with breast cancer; it offers a monthly meeting featuring educational presentations. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., Fanning room, Mercy Medical Plaza.
Next meeting:
.May 8, 7 p.m., Fanning room, Mercy Medical Plaza.  Jessica A. Williams, RN, Oncolgy Certified Nurse, will discuss breast cancer care coordination. Jessica is the Breast Cancer Coordinator at Cancer Care of Iowa City.
June  12, 7 p.m. Fanning room, Mercy Medical Plaza.

Diabetes Support Group
This group provides support for those with Type 2 diabetes. No registration is necessary. Meeting times rotate between afternoon and evening times on the first Thursday of the month (no meeting in July). The group meets in the Scanlon room, Mercy Medical Plaza.

HOPE Cancer Support Group
This group provides friendship, support, and education for people living with newly diagnosed or chronic cancer, their families and friends, and interested professionals. The group meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m., in the first floor conference room. 
Next meeting:.. 
Saturday, April 26, 10 to 11:30 a.m., Annual Cancer Survivors Day Celebration of Life. This year the theme is "Rise and Shine for Cancer Survivors, Families, and Friends." At 10:15 a.m. there will be presentations and music  provided by those who have had a journey with cancer. A breakfast bar, drawings, and social time are also on the agenda.
Monday, May 12, 7 p.m., "Survivorship - What Does that Mean?" Group discussion.
Monday, June 9, 7 p.m. "Health and Faith," discussion with Tim Bernemann, Director of Pastoral Care, Mercy Iowa City.
Monday, July 14, 7 p.m. To be determined.

Stroke Group
This group provides information, support, and friendship for stroke survivors and their families and friends. It meets twice each month at Mercy from 1:30 to 3 p.m., in Cafe A (near the entrance of the Mercy Cafeteria).

Tuesday, April 15, Group discussion on adaptive ways to do things. Time to share lessons on how to make things easier, simpler, or safer to do.
Tuesday, May 6, 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Out to Lunch at Village Inn, 9 Sturgis Corner, Iowa City. To RSVP call Mercy On Call at 358-2767 or 800-358-2767
Tuesday, May 20, No meeting - do something good for yourself or others.
Tuesday, June 3, 1:30 to 3 p.m., 27th Anniversary Celebration of the Stroke Group. All past participants are welcome to attend.
