Nutrition and Wellness Center

Mercy has a Nutrition and Wellness Center which includes Diabetes Education, wellness assessments, nutrition appointments with a registered dietitian and weight loss programs. The Nutrition & Wellness Center is located on the first level of the hospital, near the Cafeteria.

What We Offer

Nutrition and Wellness Coaching
  • An individual nutrition assessment completed by a Registered Dietitian for general nutrition education not related to a medical diagnosis. 
  • No doctor referral is required and topics may include: healthy eating for you and your family, weight loss, mindful eating and increasing fiber in your diet. 
  • Fee is $45 for 30 minutes; $90 for an hour. Please call 319-339-3538 to schedule your appointment.
Wellness Warriors
  • A 12 week weight loss program that includes weekly classes taught by a Registered Dietitian, lipid and glucose blood tests and a physical therapy assessment.
  • This will help you set weight loss and health goals and be accountable with weekly weigh-ins. The focus of classes are healthy eating, portion control and the importance of physical activity.
Pre-diabetes class to prevent complications
  • Intended for people who do not have diabetes, but have higher than normal blood sugars. 
  • The goal is to make changes in behavior to prevent or delay a diagnosis of diabetes. 
  • Instruction includes understanding prediabetes, healthy eating and the importance of physical activity. 
  • All classes are taught by a registered dietitian.

Outpatient Diabetes Education Program and Outpatient Pregnancy Diabetes Education Program

Both programs are recognized by the American Diabetes Association, and certified by the State of Iowa. The Outpatient Diabetes Education Program includes:

  • Initial assessment of the person's educational needs
  • Education specific to the needs of the individual, and ordered by the doctor
  • Instruction in a group or individual setting

Information covered includes:

  • Definition of diabetes
  • Self blood glucose monitoring
  • Exercise
  • Diet management
  • Medication
  • Insulin administration
  • Acute complications
  • Chronic complications
  • Coping with diabetes
  • Achievement of goals
  • Insulin pump therapy

Instruction for diabetes during pregnancy is scheduled for two hours, with follow-up appointments. Topics include:

  • What is diabetes and how does it affect the mother and the baby
  • Self blood glucose monitoring
  • Diet
  • Safe exercise

Insurance may cover the cost of Diabetes Education. Pre-diabetes class is self pay.
