Wednesday, October 24, 2018 - Mercy Iowa City Recognized by Healthgrades with Five-Star Distinction

Mercy Iowa City announced today that it has achieved the Healthgrades® 2019 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for an 11th consecutive year (2008-2019), Total Knee Replacement for a 17th consecutive year (2003-2019) and Heart Failure. Mercy Iowa City is the only hospital in Iowa to receive the Total Knee Replacement Five-Star Distinction for 17 consecutive years. These distinctions recognize Mercy Iowa City as a top hospital nationwide according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

“We know that Mercy Iowa City is recognized for having some of the best outcomes and highest quality of any hospital in Iowa,” said Sean Williams, President and CEO. “Together with the highly personalized care, private rooms, easy access and exceptional colleagues, these recognitions from Healthgrades reinforce what we know about our team. I’m extremely proud of the team we have.”

Variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2015 through 2017, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, then on average 222,210 lives could potentially have been saved and 157,210 in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided. A 5-star rating indicates that Mercy Iowa City’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

“Clinical quality varies significantly between hospitals, so it’s important for consumers to use information about outcomes to assess where to receive care,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “These 5-star ratings showcase the expertise and commitment of Mercy Iowa City to their patients.”
