Strategic affiliation and management agreement with Des Moines-based MercyOne to enter transition.

Mercy Iowa City announces three strategic managerial changes that are effective this week. Town hall-style meetings have been scheduled for today to communicate the following updates to staff and physicians:

  • Tom Clancy has been appointed president and CEO of Mercy Iowa City by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Clancy is the Chair of the Board and has a long history with Mercy. He worked at Mercy Iowa City as a nurse in the 1990s and lives in Iowa City.
Dr. Clancy previously served as a Clinical Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing (UM SON) and was responsible for facilitating corporate and community partnerships. He has facilitated multiple healthcare business partnerships with local and national corporations and community and professional organizations. These included developing nurse-managed clinics and faculty practices in the Twin Cities, healthcare consultation in information technology, process workflow, computer simulation, modeling and big data.
  • The Board has hired management and advisory firm ToneyKorf Partners, LLC to develop and implement a plan to improve Mercy Iowa City’s operations. The firm has worked with Mercy Iowa City for the past few months on forecasting cash flow. Mark Toney, co-founder and Senior Managing Director of ToneyKorf Partners, will help lead the organization as it assesses strategic options and new affiliations.
  • MercyOne will enter into a transition from the current Management Services Agreement with Mercy Iowa City that started in 2017. Mike Trachta, MercyOne Vice President of Network Affiliates, will no longer be serving as the Interim President of Mercy Iowa City. MercyOne will work with Mercy Iowa City on the transition of other services provided. Much of this transition will occur immediately, although some services will take longer to transition.

Dr. Clancy, the newly-appointed President and CEO, stated, “I look forward to serving this important hospital as its CEO and capitalizing on its history and mission in the region. Our hospital is known for its quality services, low wait times, and compassionate patient care by our physicians and staff. With a new urgency for change, these attributes will help guide us through the healthcare landscape during these challenging times.”
