Surgery

Physicians and dedicated surgical teams perform a number of surgeries at Mercy including general, orthopedic, robotic, cardiovascular, podiatric, and plastic. Some of these procedures include: 
  • Advanced laparoscopic surgery- anti reflux surgery (nissen fundoplication), appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and colectomy
  • Anorectal surgery-abscess, fissurectomy, fistulotomy, hemorrhoidectomy/rubber band ligation, sphincterotomy
  • Breast cancer surgery
  • Breast surgery-biopsy, lumpectomy, needle localization biopsy, male breast enlargement/gynecomastia, mastectomy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy
  • Colon surgery-colectomy, low anterior resections, abdominal perineal resection, colonoscopy and endoscopy
  • Gastrostomy placement
  • Adult and pediatric hernia repair
  • Myocutaneous flap wound closure
  • Port placement and central lines
  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy
  • Single incision laproscopic surgery
  • Skin and soft rissue biopsy and excisions, pilonidal cyst management

Pre-surgical Dietary Orders

First surgery start
Surgery is scheduled at 7:30 a.m. For earlier starts, please adjust times appropriately.  

Infants (12 months and under) may have clear liquids* until 5:30 a.m. or up to 2 hours prior to the start of the surgery if the surgery is scheduled to start earlier. Infants may have breast milk until 3:30 a.m. or up to 4 hours prior to the start of the surgery. Infants may have formula or non-human milk up until 3:30 or 6 hours prior to the start of the surgery.

Adults and Children (older than 12 months old) may have up to 8 oz. of clear liquids until 5:30 a.m. or up to 2 hour prior to the start of the surgery. Adults and children may have a light meal consisting of one piece of plain toast and clear liquids* until 1:30 a.m. or up to 6 hours prior to the start of the surgery. After the light meal, the patient may have up to 8 oz. of clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to the start of the surgery.

For all other surgery start times

Infants (12 months and under)
may have clear liquids* up to 2 hours prior to the start of the surgery. Infants may have breast milk up to 4 hours prior to the start of the surgery. Infants may have formula or non-human milk up to 6 hours prior to the start of the surgery. All other foods should be consumed at least 8 hours prior to the scheduled start time.

Adults and children (older than 12 months old) may have up to 8 oz. of clear liquids* up to 2 hours prior to the start of the surgery. Adults and children may have a light meal consisting of one piece of plain toast and clear liquids* up to 6 hours prior to the start of the surgery. All other food should be consumed at least 8 hours prior to the start of the surgery.     These recommendations are not intended for women in labor.

    * Examples of clear liquids include water, fruit juices without pulp, carbonated beverages such as 7-Up or Sprite, clear tea, and black coffee (no cream or sugar). Because non-human milk is similar to solids in the digestive process, the amount ingested must be considered when determining an appropriate fasting period.

    A light meal typically consists of one piece of plain toast and clear liquids. After the light meal 6 hours prior to surgery, the patient may have up to 8 oz. of clear liquids up to 2 hours prior to the start of the surgery.
