Bariatric Surgery Options

Why bariatric surgery?
Once a person is severely obese, the likelihood that he or she will lose enough weight by dietary means alone and remain at a healthy BMI is estimated at 3 percent or less. (Gastrointestinal surgery for severe obesity: national Institute of health consensus Development Conference Statement. Am J Clin Nutr 1992.)

National statistics demonstrate that 80-90 percent of individuals who undergo bariatric surgery maintain at least 60% of their weight loss.

Bariatric surgery can improve or resolve co-morbidities, prevent new health problems, reduce healthcare utilization and costs, lead to effective long-term weight loss, and increase life expectancy.

Y-type gastric by-pass
Roux-en Y Type Gastric By-Pass Procedure
(image above) is the golden standard for weight loss surgery and works through restriction and malabsorption. Your surgeon will close off a large portion of your stomach, which will limit the amount of food you can eat at one time, and re-route the small intestine while skipping about one third of it, which will limit the amount of nutrition and calories that will be absorbed during digestion. By-Pass is the most invasive and effective option. It is especially effective in helping diabetics.

vertical sleeve by-pass
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (image above) is a newer surgical option. Your surgeon will remove a large part of the stomach, leaving only a small pouch, which will restrict the amount of food you can comfortably eat. It is less effective than By-Pass, but also less invasive.

gastric banding
Adjustable gastric banding (lap-band)
is the least effective option. Your surgeon will place a band around the top of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food you can comfortably eat. Your band will be connected to a port under your skin, which your surgeon can use to adjust your band.
